How to cancel ChatGPT Plus on the web, iPhone & Android
Cancelling ChatGPT takes about a minute once you know one thing: who is charging you. If you upgraded on chatgpt.com, OpenAI bills you and you cancel in ChatGPT's settings. If you upgraded inside the ChatGPT app on an iPhone or Android phone, Apple or Google bills you, and chatgpt.com has no cancel button for it. This guide shows how to check, then walks through each route. The steps are the same for Plus, Pro and Go.
Bought on chatgpt.com: Settings > Billing > Cancel plan
Bought in the iPhone or iPad app: App Store subscription, cancel with Apple
Bought in the Android app: Google Play subscription, cancel with Google
Deadline: at least 24 hours before your next billing date
After cancelling: paid features last until the period you paid for ends

OpenAI sells the same plans through three channels, and each one is cancelled in its own place. The phone in your hand doesn't decide it; the place you paid does. A Plus plan bought on chatgpt.com is cancelled on chatgpt.com even if you mostly use the iPhone app. Run these three checks:
- Apple: on your iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. If ChatGPT is listed, Apple bills you through the App Store.
- Google: open the Google Play Store, signed in to the Google account you would have paid with, and go to Subscriptions. If ChatGPT is there, Google Play bills you.
- OpenAI directly: sign in at chatgpt.com and open Settings. If your plan is managed there, it's a web subscription.
Your card statement helps too: Apple and Google charges show up under their names, while a web subscription shows OpenAI or ChatGPT. If you find ChatGPT in more than one place, you are paying twice. OpenAI says this happens when people subscribe on more than one platform, so cancel the one you don't want to keep.
Cancel ChatGPT on chatgpt.com
Use this route if you upgraded in a web browser. It works for Plus, Pro and Go.
- Sign in at chatgpt.com with the account that has the paid plan.
- Open your account menu (your profile icon) and select Settings.
- Select Billing. If you don't see it, check the Account section; OpenAI moves things around from time to time.
- Under Cancel plan, select Cancel and confirm.
Lost access to the email on the account? OpenAI's help page says to contact OpenAI Support and include the account email, the last four digits of the card you paid with, and the date of your latest subscription payment.
Cancel a ChatGPT App Store subscription (iPhone & iPad)
If you upgraded inside the ChatGPT app on an iPhone or iPad, Apple holds the subscription and only Apple can stop it.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your name at the top.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
No iPhone nearby? The same App Store subscription can be cancelled from a Mac or a browser. Our App Store cancellation guide has those paths.
Cancel a ChatGPT Google Play subscription
If you upgraded inside the ChatGPT app on Android, Google Play holds the subscription. You can cancel it on your phone or from any computer.
- Open the Google Play Store app and check you're signed in to the Google account you paid with.
- Go to Subscriptions (in the menu under your profile picture).
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts to confirm.
On a computer, open your subscriptions at play.google.com, sign in with the same Google account, select Manage next to ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription. More detail in our Google Play cancellation guide.
Know your ChatGPT renewal date before it charges
Add ChatGPT to On Top of Subs with its renewal date and price, and you'll get a reminder before the next charge, so you can decide while there's still time. If you pay through the App Store or Google Play, one tap opens the store's own cancellation screen and you confirm there. If you pay on chatgpt.com, the app points you to the steps. No bank login, no account. Free on iOS & Android.
What happens after you cancel
- No cut-off today. Paid features stay on until the end of the billing period you've already paid for. After that you won't be charged again.
- Timing matters. OpenAI says to cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date. Cancel later than that and the next period may already be charged.
- Your account stays. Cancelling only stops the paid plan. You don't need to delete your account, and you can keep using ChatGPT's free version once the paid period ends.
- Check it stuck. In Apple's or Google's subscription list, ChatGPT should now show an end or expiry date instead of a renewal date. Then watch your next statement to make sure no new charge appears.
If you started a paid plan through a promotion or free offer, the same steps apply. Cancel before the offer ends if you don't want to be charged, and check the offer's own terms for whether access continues to its end date.
Can you get a refund?
Cancelling is not a refund. It stops future renewals, and past charges stay put. OpenAI's refund page describes subscription payments as generally non-refundable, with limited exceptions such as a verified billing error, an unauthorized charge, or a documented service failure. Forgetting to cancel doesn't count on its own. Where to ask depends on who billed you:
- chatgpt.com or Google Play purchase: sign in to the ChatGPT account that was charged, open the OpenAI Help Center and use the chat widget in the bottom-right corner to request a refund.
- App Store purchase: OpenAI can't refund it. Request it from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com, where Apple decides case by case.
Cancelling vs deleting your account
These are different actions, and mixing them up can cost you. Deleting your ChatGPT account cancels a subscription billed directly through chatgpt.com, but it does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription. Those keep charging until you cancel them with Apple or Google. Deletion is also permanent: OpenAI deletes your data within 30 days (except what it must keep by law), and you can only sign up again with the same email after 30 days.
If all you want is to stop paying, just cancel the plan. If you do want to delete the account, cancel any App Store or Google Play subscription first, then delete it from Settings > Account on chatgpt.com.
ChatGPT Business plans
A self-serve ChatGPT Business workspace (formerly called Team) can only be cancelled by a workspace owner. If you're a member without billing access, ask your workspace owner.
- Sign in to ChatGPT as a workspace owner.
- Open your account menu and select Workspace settings.
- Go to Billing and select Manage plan.
- Choose Cancel subscription.
The cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
Frequently asked questions
Cancel it wherever you're billed. If you subscribed on chatgpt.com, go to Settings, then Billing, and select Cancel under Cancel plan. If you subscribed in the iPhone app, cancel in Settings > your name > Subscriptions. If you subscribed in the Android app, cancel in the Google Play Store under Subscriptions.
Usually because Apple or Google bills you, not OpenAI. If you bought Plus inside the ChatGPT app on an iPhone or Android phone, chatgpt.com can't cancel it. Look in your Apple subscriptions or your Google Play subscriptions instead, and make sure you're signed in to the account you paid with.
No. Uninstalling the ChatGPT app doesn't cancel a subscription billed through the App Store or Google Play, and deleting your ChatGPT account doesn't cancel those store subscriptions either. Cancel the subscription itself first.
Not automatically. Cancelling stops future renewals but doesn't refund past charges, and OpenAI treats payments as generally non-refundable, with limited exceptions such as billing errors or unauthorized charges. Ask OpenAI Support for web or Google Play purchases; for App Store purchases, the refund request goes to Apple.
You keep paid features until the end of the billing period you've already paid for, and you won't be charged again. Cancelling doesn't delete your account, so you can keep using ChatGPT's free version after that date. Cancel at least 24 hours before your next billing date to avoid another charge.
Only a workspace owner can do it. Sign in, open your account menu, select Workspace settings, then Billing, then Manage plan, and choose Cancel subscription. The cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
