How to cancel Amazon Prime (and when you get a refund)

Updated 3 October 2026·6 min read

You can cancel Amazon Prime online in a few minutes, as long as you cancel in the right place and click all the way to the confirmation screen. This guide covers the direct link, the steps on the website and in the Amazon app, what to do if Google Play bills you, when Amazon refunds the fee, and the Prime Video add-ons that can keep charging after Prime is gone.

Fast facts
Cancel link: amazon.com/mm/pipeline/cancellation (signed in)
Price (US): $14.99 a month or $139 a year; Prime Video on its own is $8.99 a month
Refund: full refund only if you haven't used Prime benefits since your last charge, or within 3 business days of paying
Billed by Google Play? Cancel in Google Play, not on Amazon
Don't forget: Prime Video channels and add-ons are separate subscriptions

First: who bills you for Prime?

You cancel a subscription where you pay for it, not on whichever device you happen to be holding. For Prime there are three possibilities:

Not sure? Look at the charge on your statement. A Google Play charge usually names Google, and a bundled Prime shows up on the partner's bill rather than as a separate Amazon charge.

Cancel Amazon Prime on the website

  1. Sign in at amazon.com with the account that pays for Prime. On a shared household, make sure it's the account holder's login, not a household member's.
  2. Go straight to amazon.com/mm/pipeline/cancellation. If you'd rather click through, open Account & Lists, choose Prime Membership, and look for the option to manage, update or cancel your membership.
  3. Choose the option to end or cancel your membership.
  4. Read each screen before you click. Amazon may suggest pausing, switching to a different plan, or keeping your benefits. Pick the cancel option each time.
  5. Stop only when you see a confirmation that your membership is ending, with a date. If you closed the tab before that screen, you probably haven't cancelled.

Cancel in the Amazon Shopping app

The app reaches the same membership settings as the website. Menu labels move around between app versions, so look for these rather than an exact path:

  1. Open the Amazon Shopping app and tap the profile icon.
  2. Open Your Account and find Prime membership (sometimes under account settings).
  3. Tap the option to manage your membership, then the option to end or cancel it.
  4. Follow the prompts until you get the confirmation screen.
Can't find it in the app? Open your phone's browser instead, sign in to amazon.com and go to amazon.com/mm/pipeline/cancellation. It's the same membership, so the result is the same.

If you pay for Prime through Google Play

When Google Play is the one charging you, Amazon can't cancel it for you. Google's subscriptions center works the same from an Android phone, a tablet or a computer:

  1. Open the Google Play Store app and sign in with the Google account that pays.
  2. Tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
  3. Select Amazon and tap Cancel subscription, then confirm.
  4. On a computer, go to play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions instead.

Full steps, including refunds on Google Play, are in our Google Play cancellation guide.

What about the App Store? Amazon's Prime help pages don't list Apple as a way to pay for Prime itself. Some Prime Video add-ons and Prime Video Ad Free can be paid through Apple, though. Those are cancelled in your App Store subscriptions, at least 24 hours before they renew.

What the cancellation screens look like

Cancelling Prime is not a single button. Expect a few screens in a row, each one giving you a reason to stay. Depending on your plan you may see:

None of these screens cancels anything on its own. Only the final confirmation counts. If you pause instead, keep in mind that Amazon says subscriptions tied to Prime end while your billing is paused, and a pause longer than 365 days turns into a cancellation.

Will Amazon refund you?

Amazon's Prime terms (updated August 2026) set out the refund rules for memberships billed directly by Amazon:

Amazon's help page says eligible refunds are processed in three to five business days. "Benefits" is broad here: Prime shipping on an order and streaming Prime Video both count. If Google Play or another company bills you, their refund policy applies instead.

Annual members, watch the renewal date. A $139 renewal you didn't mean to pay is only fully refundable if nobody on the account uses Prime after it hits. One Prime-shipped order or one episode, and the refund chance shrinks.

Prime Video channels and add-ons are separate

Channels you added inside Prime Video (Paramount+, for example) and other add-ons are their own subscriptions with their own charges. Amazon's own help pages don't agree on what happens to them when Prime ends: the Prime cancellation page says Prime Video subscriptions such as Paramount+ continue after your membership ends, while the Prime Video help page says add-ons tied to Prime don't renew once it ends. Don't leave it to chance:

  1. Open Your Memberships & Subscriptions on amazon.com.
  2. Check every active item, not just Prime: channels, Kindle Unlimited, Audible, Amazon Music and so on.
  3. On primevideo.com you can also go to Account & Settings, then Subscriptions, find the add-on and select Unsubscribe (sometimes shown as withdraw), then confirm.

Amazon says cancelling an add-on doesn't refund past charges; you keep access until the end date shown on the confirmation, and you can undo the cancellation until then. If you pay for an add-on through Apple, cancel it in your App Store subscriptions at least 24 hours before it renews. Leaving Paramount+ completely? See our Paramount+ cancellation guide.

Cancel Prime Video on its own, or Prime Video Ad Free

Prime Video only (the standalone $8.99 a month membership, without shipping): on primevideo.com go to Account & Settings, open the Your Account tab and select End Subscription. If you signed up through a third party such as a mobile provider, cancel with them.

Prime Video Ad Free (the extra charge to remove ads):

Ads come back after the current billing cycle ends. Cancelling Ad Free doesn't cancel Prime, and cancelling Prime is the bigger step if you want both gone.

Cancel a Prime free trial before it charges

New members usually get a 30-day free trial, and Amazon's own help page is clear that it upgrades to a paid membership automatically when the trial ends. To avoid the first charge, cancel before the trial end date with the same steps as above. Give yourself a day or two of margin rather than cancelling on the last evening.

Whether you keep the trial benefits until the end date after cancelling depends on what Amazon shows you during the flow, so read the confirmation screen for the exact end date. If the trial already converted, the 3-business-day refund rule above applies.

Why Prime was so hard to cancel: the FTC case

In June 2023 the FTC sued Amazon, alleging it signed people up for Prime without clear consent and made cancelling deliberately difficult. According to the FTC's amended complaint, the online cancellation path, which Amazon internally called the "Iliad Flow", made people navigate four pages, six clicks and fifteen options, while joining took one or two clicks.

On 25 September 2025 Amazon settled for $2.5 billion: a $1 billion civil penalty and $1.5 billion in refunds. Among other things, the order requires Amazon to:

Refunds: according to the FTC's refunds page (updated September 2026), Amazon started paying eligible US customers in November 2025 and had paid out over $845 million by September 2026. Payments continue automatically through April 2027, up to $200 per eligible customer in total, and no claim form is needed. Eligibility covers people who joined through certain enrollment flows, or tried and failed to cancel online, between 23 June 2019 and 23 June 2025, and who used no more than 20 Prime benefits in any 12-month period. The FTC says it won't contact you about these refunds, and nobody legitimate will charge you to get one. Details are on the FTC's Amazon refunds page.

On Top of Subs

Catch the next Prime renewal before it charges

Add Prime and each Prime Video channel to On Top of Subs with their renewal dates, and get a reminder before the annual charge or a free trial lands, while cancelling still stops it. If Prime or an add-on is billed through Google Play or the App Store, one tap opens the store's own cancellation screen for you to confirm. If Amazon bills you directly, the app points you to the steps on this page. No bank login. Free on iOS & Android.

After you cancel: 3 quick checks

Amazon changes prices, menus and refund terms from time to time. Confirm the current details on Amazon's official Cancel Your Amazon Prime Membership help page and the Prime Terms & Conditions before you cancel.

Frequently asked questions

Sign in to Amazon, go to amazon.com/mm/pipeline/cancellation (or Your Prime Membership, then the manage or cancel option) and follow the prompts until you see a confirmation. If you joined through Google Play on Android or through another company, cancel with them instead.

It depends on use. Amazon's terms say you get a full refund if you cancel within 3 business days of paying (minus the value of any benefits used in that window), or at any other time if you and your account have not used Prime benefits or made eligible purchases since your latest charge. Otherwise you are not refunded and you simply are not charged again.

Do not count on it. Amazon's help pages disagree: one says channels such as Paramount+ continue after Prime ends, another says add-ons tied to Prime do not renew. Open Your Memberships and Subscriptions and cancel each channel you no longer want.

If you joined through the Amazon Shopping app on Android and paid through Google Play, Amazon says to cancel in Google Play subscriptions. Open the Play Store app, tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions, or use play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions in any browser.

Yes. The trial turns into a paid membership automatically when it ends, so cancel before the end date using the same steps. Check the confirmation screen for the date your benefits end, since that can depend on your plan.

Possibly. In September 2025 Amazon agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement with the FTC, including $1.5 billion in refunds. Eligible US customers get automatic payments through April 2027, up to $200 in total, with no claim needed. The FTC's Amazon refunds page lists who qualifies.
